THE PRESIDENT’S CUP

Description

A Silver Bowl engraved with names back to 1971 sitting on top a black base with names beginning in 1994 when it became the official runners up trophy

History

Given by Horace Smedley in 1917 to replace a Low Gross Score Cup awarded previously. Horace then changed the criteria to make a “low net” competition. It was to be awarded annually to the member earning the most points over the year using a remarkably convoluted system – as written on p59 of volume one: “Low net score shall count 10 point to each player attaining it, 9 points to the second low net score, 8 points to the 3rd low net score and so on. Low gross score shall count five points to each member attaining it. In no event shall one player be credited with more than ten points in any one game.” *

In 1994, during the tenure of Edward T. Tisdall (President), & Carl P. Berlinger (Secretary), the criteria changed, making it the 2nd most low net scores (ie. thereby making it the runner up prize to the Ozone Bowl.) The names on the new base of the President’s Trophy begin at this date.

* God bless the poor soul who had to keep track of such things!

How is it won

  • Awarded to the runner up of the Ozone Bowl (i.e. to the Ozoner who has the second highest number of Stableford points in the top six outings)
